FAQs
What are the benefits of having a doula?
A doula is a birth professional trained in supporting you and your family during a very sacred and special time. Doulas provide physical, emotional, and informational support to the family from pregnancy, through birth, and into the postpartum period. As non-medical professionals, doulas do not replace your midwife or OB. Rather their job is to focus on your journey into parenthood, making it as comfortable and empowering as possible while keeping true to your wishes and goals.
I’m planning to have an epidural. How does a doula support me?
There are many types of support available to a laboring person, and pain management is one of them. Your doula supports all birthing options, ensuring you have the information you need to make informed decisions. Before an epidural, your doula helps to keep you comfortable with providing comfort measures such as breathing, positional changes, massage, and other strategies. Your doula aids in your comfort throughout your birth process and immediately into the postpartum period.
How do doulas offer support during a cesarean?
Doulas support every type of birth, including cesareans. We understand that babies are born in different ways. In the event of a scheduled cesarean section, we help you plan for the birth by knowing your options and what to do if you go into spontaneous labor before your scheduled date. Your birth doula is your support and advocate from prep to recovery. Depending on hospital policies and your situation, doulas may be able to support you in the operating room. While you are recovering, your doula can help you and your family with any questions or concerns that may arise and attend to your comfort and needs, including assistance with bonding, breastfeeding, and navigating recovery.
How does payment for doula services work?
It’s a good idea to check with your insurance company and/or FSA/HSA provider to see if doula services are covered. Many companies in Massachusetts have started to offer their employees benefits that cover doula services. If applicable, we will work with your employer to help with reimbursement.
The Sweet Circle currently accepts checks, PayPal, or cash. Some clients include doula services on their baby registry. Gift Cards are available to loved ones looking to purchase services for the expecting family. Lastly, if there are financial barriers to working with us, we offer payment plans.
MassHealth doula services are offered for members while pregnant, during delivery, and up to 12 months after delivery. Services are subject to MassHealth coverage limitations.
